This essay was necessary. So was the title. I recently considered how much time I have wasted over four decades changing my route, crossing the street, looking over my shoulder, avoiding walking in the dark or dodging creeps in public spaces.... countless years if we do the math. All time I could have spent enjoying my life, being productive and making money. Guys like John here should be grateful we are asking for empathy and equality and not revenge. That some men still do not understand that hating the SYSTEM of men is necessary for the survival of humanity is wild to me. Makes us appreciate the good ones who are willing to change.
Im sure you are trying to be helpful John but to me, that’s missing the point of the article. Why do we need to be fiercer, possibly buy a gun to just walk outside? Where is the suggestion men are punished or learn to leave women alone? Why is the onus in us, constantly and always. I am so loving being invisible now but as a group older woman are attacked more frequently because they are more vulnerable there is no safety because its about violence, anger and hate not sex, about control and domination. Thanks for this J. I am sorry for your experiences and mine too thoughtful piece.
Wow, so powerful. Your words took my breath away. I am now a 68 year old woman and if there's one thing I do like about ageing, it's the invisibility ... sometimes. But, it seems like yesterday when your words, your story was my own. Despite my age, I don't feel safe if I'm out at night ... which is rare, but I do still love to go to the theater in the city and I hate that feeling of vulnerability. It never ends and it damn well should. Thank you for this piece and your honesty.
Sadly, it’s only getting worse out there. Please consider learning Krav Maga - it’s incredibly effective and empowering. You will be a lot safer each time you leave home.

Meanwhile, you can choose not to be a victim and learn to defend yourself.

Please consider telling men not to be assholes and invade our space or like, you know, rape us. Hope this helps.
